  • Accessible Voting in Tribal and Rural Communities: Strategies and Lessons for Polling Places

    Join the United States Access Board and The Native American Disability Law Center (NADLC) for a collaborative webinar on polling place accessibility. The Native American Disability Law Center is a private nonprofit organization that advocates for the legal rights of Native Americans with disabilities. This webinar will cover NADLC's report of polling place accessibility in Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribal elections, discuss community-led advocacy to affect changes in accessibility, and discuss strategies and lessons for self-advocates, families, and professionals to utilize in their work. Additional resources on polling place accessibility will be provided.

  • August 7 Is National Purple Heart Day

    Also known as Purple Heart Recognition or Appreciation Day, National Purple Heart Day is a time for recognizing and honoring recipients of the Purple Heart Medal. The medal is presented to service members who either were wounded or sacrificed their lives while serving in the U.S. military. Created in 1782 by President George Washington and the oldest award to be still presented in the military, more than 1.8 million Purple Heart medals have been awarded.

    July 26, 2026, marks the 36th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)! The anniversary is a time to celebrate, learn, and share. Celebrate this landmark event, learn more about the impact of the ADA, and share your knowledge with your communities!   • Lunch and Learn Webinar Series: Effective Communication

    Join the Pacific ADA Center for their second 2026 Lunch and Learn Webinar of the year – Effective Communication under the ADA: A Deeper Dive! Explore what the requirements are for effective communication under the ADA and learn specific information about requesting the type of communication you need.

    Learning objectives

    • Participants who need an American Sign Language interpreter will learn how to specify what type of interpreter they need.
    • Participants with vision disabilities will discover the type of alternative format or other communication aid or service that works best to help them read and understand written communications.
    • Participants with speech disabilities will learn about requesting extra time for appointments and other modifications they may need to communicate effectively.

    The Northeast ADA Center and technical assistance services will be closed on July 3. The center will open again on July 6. Please note that our normal hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm.

  • Beyond Code Minimums: Designing Accessible Kitchens and Bathrooms

    Between the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Fair Housing Act (FHA), Section 504, and general building codes, housing standards can be confusing for those with nondiscrimination requirements under the law as well as individuals with disabilities looking to live independently or age in place. In this webinar, attendees will learn practical design standards that go beyond minimal code compliance—so you can recognize quality accessibility when you see it (or request it when you don't). Our speakers will share a Reference Guide and Kitchen and Bathroom Prototypes that they developed to reflect an inclusive design approach to plan for accessibility in any housing type. This session would benefit architects, builders, developers, planners and community development professionals, municipal officials who review plans and anyone invested in housing that serves people across their lifespan.

    When accessibility is built in from the blueprint stage, everyone gains the freedom to age in place and adapt their homes as needs change. We're all aging. Let's design for that reality from day one.
